Natural crystals changing over time with rainbow inclusions and raw quartz | Luzzy Aura

Why Do Natural Crystals Change Over Time?

People who wear natural crystals for a long time may begin to notice some interesting changes.

A crystal that once had no visible rainbows may develop new ones. Some crystals seem to become clearer and more lustrous with wear, while others gradually become lighter in color. Some may suddenly develop internal fractures, or slowly begin to look cloudy and lose the brightness they once had.

Some of these changes come from the physical properties of the crystal and the environment in which it is worn. Others seem to appear alongside changes in the wearer’s own state and energy.

Here are some of the most common ways crystals can change over time.

1. Why Can New Rainbows Appear Inside a Crystal?

This phenomenon is more commonly seen in quartz varieties such as Clear Quartz, Amethyst, and Citrine.

The rainbows we see inside crystals are often associated with optical interference caused by tiny internal fractures. When a fracture creates the right kind of interface, light entering the crystal can reflect and interfere within it, producing iridescent colors. This type of iridescence in natural quartz has also been documented by the GIA.

Quartz has a Mohs hardness of around 7, but hardness mainly describes resistance to scratching. It does not mean that the internal structure of a crystal can never change.

Existing microfractures may change as a result of impact, temperature fluctuations, or internal stress. This means that, physically, it is possible for new rainbows to appear inside a crystal over time.

I once received a particularly interesting piece of feedback from one of my clients.

She had purchased a Rainbow Clear Quartz bracelet from me. Because she loved the rainbows inside the crystals so much, she had taken many photographs when she first received it and was very familiar with the original appearance of each bead.

During a period when she was feeling particularly well and was in a very positive state, she noticed that the crystals seemed to become clearer. Even more interestingly, new rainbows appeared in places where she was certain there had been none before.

Later, she began an internship at a hospital and went through a period of prolonged physical and emotional exhaustion.

When she looked at the bracelet again, the crystals seemed noticeably cloudier and less luminous. Even one of the rainbows that had appeared during the previous period was no longer visible.

2. Why Do Some Crystals Become Clearer and More Lustrous With Wear?

This is often noticed in Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz, Agate, Chalcedony, and other highly polished crystal beads.

With regular wear, contact with the skin, natural oils, cleaning, and everyday friction can affect the way light reflects from the surface of a bead. As a result, the crystal may visually appear smoother, more lustrous, and more transparent.

From a mineralogical perspective, however, this does not mean that the human body can gradually make internal veils, mineral inclusions, or other natural features inside a crystal disappear.

At the same time, throughout years of working with crystals, I have repeatedly received another kind of feedback from clients.

Many have told me that during periods when they feel emotionally stable, relaxed, and energetically well, their crystals also seem especially clear and luminous.

During periods of prolonged anxiety, exhaustion, emotional heaviness, or time spent in particularly draining environments, the same crystals may begin to look cloudy, dull, or almost as though a film has settled over them.

Within crystal energy practice, this is often understood as one possible expression of the ongoing energetic exchange between a crystal and the person who wears it.

This is an observation from crystal energy practice rather than a mechanism currently established by mineralogical science.

3. Why Do Some Crystals Become Lighter in Color?

The color of a natural crystal comes from the way its internal structure interacts with light. Tiny amounts of different elements within the crystal, together with the way the crystal formed, can create the purple, pink, smoky, or other colors we see.

But in some crystals, that color is not permanently stable.

Long-term exposure to strong sunlight, ultraviolet light, or high temperatures can gradually affect the parts of the crystal responsible for its color. As this happens, the crystal may absorb light differently, causing its original color to become weaker and gradually fade.

Two good examples are Amethyst and Kunzite.

Some Amethyst can gradually lose the intensity of its purple color after prolonged exposure to strong light or heat. Kunzite is even more sensitive to light, and extended exposure to intense sunlight can noticeably fade its beautiful pinkish-purple color.

So if a once-vivid crystal gradually becomes lighter over time, sunlight, UV exposure, and heat are among the first things worth considering.

This is also why leaving every type of crystal in direct sunlight for long periods is not always a good idea.

4. Why Can a Crystal Suddenly Develop Internal Fractures?

Natural crystals may already contain microfractures, inclusions, and areas of internal stress.

Impact, significant temperature changes, or other mechanical forces can cause an existing fracture to expand or, in some cases, create new internal fractures.

But in my years of crystal energy practice, I have also received some unforgettable feedback.

One client was going through an especially difficult period. She was under a great deal of pressure, emotionally low, and had already noticed that her crystal did not seem to be in its best state.

One weekend, she attended a relative’s funeral. On her way home, she narrowly avoided a serious car accident and fortunately returned home safely.

Only afterward did she notice that several obvious new fractures had suddenly appeared inside a crystal that had previously been intact.

Whether these two events were connected is something we cannot determine.

What is interesting, however, is that similar experiences are not uncommon among crystal wearers in China.

In Chinese crystal culture, when a person remains unharmed while a crystal they have worn for a long time suddenly fractures or even breaks, people sometimes describe it as “挡灾” (dǎng zāi) — the traditional belief that the crystal has taken on or absorbed part of the difficult energy that might otherwise have affected its wearer.

From my own perspective as a crystal energy practitioner, I tend to understand it more as a form of energetic support and exchange.

When someone is deeply exhausted, emotionally depleted, or going through a period in which they need an unusual amount of support, a crystal with which they have developed a strong connection may participate in a more intense energetic exchange.

5. Why Does the Surface of a Crystal Become Cloudy or Scratched Over Time?

Many people see that quartz has a Mohs hardness of around 7 and assume that it must be extremely durable.

But there is an important distinction:

Being hard does not mean being impossible to chip, fracture, or damage.

Mohs hardness mainly measures a mineral’s resistance to scratching. Clear Quartz, Amethyst, and Citrine are all varieties of quartz with a hardness of around 7, so ordinary everyday objects are less likely to leave deep scratches on their surfaces.

However, natural crystal is still a relatively brittle material.

This is especially important when a bead already contains natural fractures, inclusions, or tiny internal fissures. Repeatedly knocking a bracelet against a table, allowing it to collide with metal jewelry, or dropping it onto a hard floor can cause small chips, surface damage, or the expansion of existing fractures.

At the same time, tiny amounts of everyday friction gradually affect the originally smooth, polished surface. Sweat, skincare products, dust, and other residue can also build up over time.

Eventually, a crystal may begin to look slightly cloudy, less reflective, or more scratched than it did when it was new.

So if a crystal that has been worn for years no longer has exactly the same mirror-like polish it had on the first day, that is not necessarily unusual.

Crystals Also Record the Time They Spend With You

Perhaps one of the most fascinating things about natural crystals is that they are not objects that necessarily remain exactly the same forever.

Some changes can be understood through mineralogy and optics. Others are still much more difficult to explain simply.

Over the years I have spent working with crystals, I have heard countless wearers describe subtle — and sometimes surprising — changes in the crystals that have accompanied them.

In the world of crystal energy, we believe that when a crystal is worn for a long time and develops a deeper connection with you, it does more than simply accompany you. There is also an ongoing exchange of energy between you and the crystal.

So if one day you notice that your crystal no longer looks exactly the way it did when you first received it, take a moment to observe the crystal — and perhaps also notice how you yourself have been feeling lately.

Maybe the crystal isn’t the only thing that has changed.
You have been moving through the same chapter of time together.
