Obsidian Meaning and Benefits: Why Am I So Easily Affected by Other People’s Opinions?
Obsidian is often regarded as a crystal that can protect us from negative people, negative energy, and unwanted influences.
However, after wearing Obsidian for a period of time, many people find themselves asking:
Why am I still so easily affected by other people’s opinions?
Why do I still encounter emotional vampires?
To understand these questions, we first need to understand what Obsidian is truly protecting.
What Is Obsidian?
From a geological perspective, Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when molten rock cools so quickly that crystals do not have enough time to develop. Unlike crystalline minerals, Obsidian has an amorphous internal structure and is therefore classified as a mineraloid rather than a true mineral.
Obsidian is commonly known for its deep black color and smooth, glass-like appearance, although it can also occur in varieties such as Snowflake Obsidian, Mahogany Obsidian, and Rainbow Obsidian.
La Obsidiana es conocida principalmente por su profundo color negro y su superficie lisa con brillo vítreo, aunque también existen variedades como la Obsidiana Nevada, la Obsidiana Caoba y la Obsidiana Arcoíris.
The Meaning and Benefits of Obsidian
In many traditions, Obsidian is considered a crystal with protective qualities.
It is often associated with protection, grounding, stability, security, and healthy boundaries.
Obsidian is believed to help block negative energy, reduce external interference, and create a safer and more stable space for ourselves.
Because of this, Obsidian has become one of the most popular protective crystals.
Obsidian and the Root Chakra
In many crystal traditions, Obsidian is believed to support the balance and healing of the Root Chakra.
The Root Chakra is often associated with security, stability, belonging, survival instincts, and our connection to the physical world.
Many traditions also connect the Root Chakra to our early life experiences, particularly how we developed a sense of safety during childhood and how we perceive ourselves in relation to the world around us.
When the Root Chakra is balanced, we tend to feel more grounded and supported from within. We are more likely to trust ourselves, face life with both feet on the ground, and experience a stronger sense of belonging and security.
When the Root Chakra is imbalanced, a person may struggle with insecurity, constantly doubt themselves, question their own worth, and experience ongoing anxiety, instability, or a lack of belonging. In more severe cases, they may even feel the urge to escape from reality.
In other situations, a Root Chakra imbalance may manifest in the opposite extreme. A person may become overly focused on security, feel the need to control people and situations around them, become excessively attached to certain relationships, habits, or possessions, and may even develop strong tendencies toward control, possessiveness, or addiction.
Obsidian is frequently associated with protection, stability, security, and healthy boundaries.
For this reason, many traditions believe that Obsidian can help support the balance of the Root Chakra.
And when a person’s Root Chakra gradually becomes more balanced, their relationship with the outside world often begins to change as well.
Why Am I Still Affected by Negative Energy After Wearing Obsidian?
This may be one of the biggest misconceptions about Obsidian.
Many people believe that Obsidian’s role is to shield them from all negative energy, malicious intentions, and external influences.
As a result, when they still find themselves affected by criticism, or still encounter difficult people and emotional vampires, they begin to wonder:
Isn’t Obsidian supposed to protect me?
Does Obsidian not work?
But in many cases, the problem is not that Obsidian has failed to protect us.
The problem is that we misunderstand what true protection actually means.
Take the same criticism.
Some people may feel hurt by it for days.
Others are able to let it go very quickly.
Take the same colleague who constantly criticizes, judges, or puts others down.
Some people allow that person to affect their emotions every day.
Others barely give them a second thought.
Why is there such a difference?
If the problem came entirely from the outside world, then we should all react the same way to the same people and situations.
But reality rarely works that way.
Very often, what determines whether we are easily affected is not simply what happens around us.
It is our own inner stability, sense of security, and personal boundaries.
When a person is internally grounded, they are less likely to question their worth because of someone else’s opinion, and less likely to be shaken by another person’s emotions.
But when a person lacks a sense of security, things often look very different.
They become more concerned about what others think.
They crave validation and approval.
And they are more likely to base their sense of worth on external feedback.
When this happens, we naturally become more vulnerable to outside influences.
Over time, this can lead to anxiety, overthinking, self-doubt, and a lack of direction.
Why Am I So Easily Affected by Other People’s Opinions?
I have a friend who has always worked extremely hard.
She is intelligent, capable, and constantly willing to learn and improve herself.
By all accounts, someone like her should have had plenty of opportunities for growth.
Yet for many years, her career never seemed to move forward in a meaningful way.
Eventually, I realized that the problem was not a lack of ability.
The real issue was that she was too easily influenced by the people around her.
For example, when her manager proposed a plan, she could often sense that certain parts of it were unreasonable.
Yet she rarely voiced her concerns.
Instead, she would immediately wonder:
Am I overthinking this?
Would it be safer to simply follow instructions?
Even when she could clearly see the problem, she struggled to express her own perspective.
The results were predictable.
Projects often failed to progress as they should have.
When colleagues made unreasonable requests, she would quietly accept them.
She took on responsibilities that did not belong to her.
She cleaned up problems that others had created.
Over time, despite being highly capable, she was not using her energy where it could create the greatest value.
Instead, she spent much of her time responding to others, meeting other people’s expectations, and solving problems that were never hers to begin with.
As a result, her professional performance never reflected her true potential.
Some people might assume that she simply had bad managers or difficult coworkers.
But the truth was that she had changed jobs several times.
Yet the same pattern kept repeating itself.
After spending more time talking with her, I realized that the issue extended far beyond the workplace.
Growing up, her parents were highly controlling.
Whether it was her education, career, or major life decisions, she had always been expected to follow their expectations.
Otherwise, she would often face criticism, rejection, or disapproval.
In order to occasionally receive their recognition and approval, she gradually learned to become a people pleaser.
She became accustomed to putting other people’s expectations ahead of her own needs.
She constantly sought validation and approval from others as a way to prove her value.
Strangely enough, no matter how hard she tried, that sense of insecurity never disappeared.
Pleasing others never brought her the success, respect, or inner peace she hoped for.
Instead, she became increasingly exhausted and increasingly doubtful of herself.
Later, based on her situation, I recommended a crystal bracelet centered around Obsidian, combined with other crystals that supported different energetic needs.
Gradually, she began to notice that the anxiety and insecurity she had carried for so many years were starting to fade.
At the same time, she began asking herself a new question:
Is this really what I want?
Is this truly the life I want to live?
Or is it simply what other people want for me?
She began reflecting on what she genuinely wanted.
And what she had only been doing to meet the expectations of others.
As time passed, she became increasingly willing to acknowledge her own needs and respect her true feelings.
As a result, she began making choices that were very different from those she had made in the past.
Interestingly, once she started doing this, many areas of her life slowly began to change.
The comments that once left her anxious for days no longer affected her in the same way.
The coworkers she once felt compelled to please no longer had the same influence over her.
What is even more interesting is that she was still working in the same environment.
The people she once considered “negative influences” were still there.
But they no longer had the power to affect her emotions and decisions as easily as before.
This was because she had started redirecting her time and energy toward her own growth and work.
Over time, her performance improved significantly.
Her income increased.
And she eventually received a promotion.
What impressed me even more was the change in her relationship with her parents.
Her parents had not become entirely different people.
But as she developed stronger boundaries and became more willing to make her own choices, her parents gradually began to respect her opinions and listen to her voice.
Looking back, the world around her had not completely changed.
What truly changed was that, with the support of crystals, she reconnected with herself and became a stronger version of who she already was.
Is Wearing Obsidian Alone Enough?
Not necessarily.
In this case, weak personal boundaries were her most significant challenge, which is why Obsidian became the primary focus of her crystal combination.
However, in many situations, a person has other challenges to face beyond boundaries alone.
That is why we often add other crystals based on an individual’s current state, providing support in different areas of life.
This is also why, at Luzzy Aura, we rarely focus on a single crystal in isolation. Instead, we pay closer attention to how different crystals can work together.
After all, crystal energies themselves are simple, but human beings are often far more complex.
